Hypothesis MeetingThis is a featured page

THe OH meeting is where the raw OH's first get evaluated. The objective of the meeting is to decide which Opportunity Hypotheses (OH’s) should move on to the Shallow Dive, resulting in an Opportunity Statement (OS). The meeting serves to share knowledge about nascent opportunity ideas and lets team members select from among those presented. The focus is on indications of need and desire. Evaluation of potential solutions is avoided (this is really hard to do but will come later).

The following diagram shows the structure of the meeting from the perspective of what happens to the OH's.

OH Meeting Process

Meeting Structure

  1. Scouts select OH’s for the meeting (day before the meeting)
  • Target is to have 9 – 15 OH’s to review for each meeting.
      1. OH Presentation and Categorization (3-5 minutes per OH)
      • OH author presents the need hypothesis. The emphasis is on need indicators and evidence.
      • Group discussion of the OH. Observations are recorded along with new ideas, questions and comments. c)Individual (private) scoring of the OH:
      Scoring codes:
      2 - Advance to mini-auction
3 – Back for more work
      4 - Table / Archive
      5 – Merge with another OH/OS/OP
      1. OH Consensus Ranking (3-5 minutes per OH)
      • For each OH, each person reveals their OH score
      • Discuss differences and resolve to a single score
      • Categorization guidelines
        • Is OH worthy of voting? Evidence supports it? – Give it a 2
        • Does OH need more work? Unclear, not enough evidence? – Give it a 3
        • Don’t believe the evidence? Skeptical? – Give it a 2 or a 4
        • Too similar to another OH, OS or OP? – Give it a 5

      OH Prioritization (Voting)

Voting takes place after the meeting. The OH's categorized as 2's are listed and sent out to all of the meeting participants (and some others as selected). Everyone is given 10 votes to allocate among the listed OH's. The voter can allocate the votes any way they wish - all 10 on one OH or 1 on 10 different OH's.

      Results

      • 3 to 4 OH’s per meeting are selected for Shallow Dives and creation of an Opportunity Statement (OS)
      • OH’s that haven’t received any votes for 2 weeks get archived
      • OH’s that get a 2 will either move on to a shallow dive or get archived
      • Additional lines of inquiry, new possible OH’s new knowledge and experience captured
