The Shallow Dive is the second level of opportunity exploration. The objective is to see where the original hypothesis leads given additional exploration. It’s not only possible to end with an opportunity statement substantially different from the original hypothesis, it’s expected! The goal is to pursue direct and indirect evidence to lead toward the most valuable opportunity. The Opportunity Statement is the output of a one week shallow dive.

Discuss the Opportunity Hypothesis (OH) with the original author. Spend a fixed amount of time exploring (8-10 hours). Use secondary and primary sources to see where the evidence leads. Build the Opportunity Statement evidence mind map. Use the template. Gravitate toward needs with greatest Ubiquity (broadly prevalent) and greatest Relevance (most deeply held)

Be open to going beyond the boundaries and parameters of the original OH. The end point is often different from the original hypothesis. That’s OK – that’s expected as well as desired. The exploration is about more than adding depth, it’s about refining the scope to improve the opportunity.

Select an evocative image. This aids in the ranking process that follows the OS Meeting.

Name of the Opportunity and Hypothesis Statement

Choose a 2-5 word title that’s evocative of the need. It should capture the need, not the solution concept. This is important - an opportunity has more in common with a problem than a solution.

Opportunity Description

Create a 100-200 word summary that tells the story of the opportunity. Capture its essence and make it compelling. Opportunities are compared side-by-side so it’s important they are presented in their best light.

Technology

Describe the technologies that may be used in a solution from the perspective of their effects. List as much evidence as you can as you discover technology effects that are (or would be) required or enabling for this opportunity.

Community

Enumerate those whose opinions will affect adoption.

List the Outcomes and Experiences that adopters may wish for. Include both what they want as well as what they want less of.

Solutions

Capture the imagination by describing what could fulfill the needs of this opportunity. Include the pros and cons of existing solutions.

Indicators

Document the magnitude of the evidence found.
  • Mark 1 to 3 bars to the right indicating the degree of supporting evidence.
  • Mark 1 to 3 bars to the left for the degree of detracting evidence found.

Color positive bars green, negative red, and ambiguous bars yellow.
If no evidence was found for an indicator (+ or -) , then leave it blank.
