Tacit KnowledgeThis is a featured page

"... the tacit aspects of knowledge are often the most valuable. They consist of embedded expertise - a deep understanding of complex, interdependent systems that enables dynamic responses to context specific problems. This type of knowledge is very difficult for corporations to replicate"
- Dorothy Leonard

In 1956, Michael Polanyi coined the term 'tacit' knowledge to refer to "Certain cognitive processes and/or behaviors are undergirded by operations inaccessible to consciousness".
Tacit knowledge has 2 components
  • Mental models – paradigms, perspectives, beliefs, schemes
  • Actions – skills, know-how, expertise
