David Galenson in his book on the evolution of creativity in artists "old masters and young geniuses" observed that if after a demonstration of a new artistic insight, all art thereafter was changed, then that demontration was an innovation. In other words, novelty was not enough.

Picasso famously said, "Good artists copy, great artists steal". This was after he painted Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, a painting that 30 years after it was painted was recognized by MOMA as the turning point in modern art. The painting was certainly novel, and it was innovative - it created new value for the consumers of art. When this painting changed our perspective, we became 'consumers' of the new 'technology' of art.
